People of Uttarakhand are celebrating its 17th Foundation Day after havign being finding its boundaries in 2000. Here is a list of places that are a must visit when on tour of Uttarakhand. Chopta lies between Kedarnath and Badrinath in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, at the entry to Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary. Chopta is the starting point for treks to Tungnath temple and Chandrashila summit. It's a short, yet scenic, moderate trek that can be completed in a day. Notably, the temple is the world's highest Shiva temple.

Almora is located on a horse shoe shaped ridge of Kasaya hill at an elevation of 1638 m above sea level. Almora has many unique temples like Golu Devta, Nanda Devi Temple, Katarmal, Jageshwar and Kasar Devi. Katarmal is an 800 year old Sun temple. Enjoying the sunset or sunrise at Bright End Corner is a must to do activity in Almora.

Chamoli is popularly known as the ‘adobe of Gods’. Famous for its shrines, temples and connections with Hindu mythology and stories Chamoli is also the town that sparked off the famous Chipko movement. Chamoli is that ideal vacation spot with something for everyone. It is an ideal blend of pilgrimage, adventure and natural serenity. The nearest airport Jolly Grant is at a distance of 222 km. The nearest railhead is Rishikesh at a distance of 202 km.

A short drive from Haridwar is the popular town of Rishikesh. Famous for its ashrams, yoga centres and of course, ‘The Beatles’, Rishikesh is also the gateway to some of Uttarakhand’s best adventure activities. As it is at the foot of the Himalayas, the best time to visit Rishikesh is when the weather is hot; October and November is just perfect. During the winter months it does get cool but Rishikesh is still very pretty to visit, so make sure you take plenty of warm clothes.

Auli lies on the way to Badrinath and has a 3 kilometer long slope, gondola, chair lift, and poma ski lift. For skiing, conditions are best from the last week of January to the first week of March. However, it's dependent on good snowfall, which is variable. If you're into trekking, the Kuari Pass trailhead is at Auli. This trek, which passes through Nanda Devi National Park, is one of the state's best and most accessible.

The hill landscapes of Munsiyari lies at the bottom of the Himalayan region offering majestic views of the snow capped Himalayas. This is where the trekking activities are held in the interior of the range.

Mussoorie is another super popular weekend destination for north Indians, as well as honeymooners. One of the main reasons for this is because it has a lot of facilities developed especially for tourists. Take a cable car to Gun Hill, enjoy a beautiful nature walk along Camel's Back Road, have a picnic at Kempty Falls, or ride a horse up to Lal Tibba (the highest peak in Mussoorie). Mussoorie also offers a superb view of the Himalayas.

Located at an elevation of 7600 ft above sea level, Binsar is known to be the highest hill station in the entire Kumaon region. It is one of the most beautiful places in Uttarakhand, and located amidst the Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary. Witnessing the panoramic view of the Himalayan peaks from Zero point is the main attraction of this region. The mesmerizing Himalayan oak and rhododendron woods are ideal for trekking. Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary houses more than 200 species of birds and other wildlife including leopard, black bear, pine marten porcupine etc. Do not forget to have a glimpse of snow packed mountains of Kedarnath, Trishul, Shivling and the Nanda Devi from famous Binsar Zero Point. The Bineshwar Temple of 13th Century India is highly attention grabbing.

If you are a peace loving soul and the boisterous city life has snatched away your sleep, take a break and head for Harsil, one of the hidden jewels of Uttarakhand. region is located at an elevation of 2620 m above sea level and occupies a picturesque landscape. During summer it has a pleasant weather and the winter is as usual chilling. If you are dying to see a lot of snow, January to March is the ideal time for that. Trekking from Harsil to Chitkul via Lamkhaga Pass adds to thrill. Other than witnessing the snow packed Himalayan peaks closely, you can see the apple orchards flourishing with fresh apples.

Located at an elevation of 2286 meters (7500 feet) above the Kumaon Hills, Mukteshwar is the nearest getaway from Delhi and Nainital. Though this hilly region is well known for the temple of lord Mahadeva, the scenic beauty is the central attraction. Have a glimpse of the excellent view of the valleys below. Trek by the woods in early morning and feel the freshness of air which is totally absent in a city life. Ramgarh has a few amazing orchards whereas Sital is known for its gushing waterfalls.
