The festival of Goddess Saraswati, known to be to Goddess if Education is being observed on 22 January this year. The history of celebrating this day as Vasant Panchmi dates back Dwapara yuga when scriptures like Srimad Bhagwatam and other Vaishnava scriptures, the transcendental Vasant ras lila took place on this night on the Govardhan hill. The place came to be known as Chandra sarovar.

Vasant Panchmi marks the onset of spring and is observed across the nation starting the day with Saraswati Puja. According to Hindu calendar, Basant Panchami falls on the fifth day (Panchami) of the Hindu month of Magha.

Bengalis choose this auspicious day to introduce their children to reading and writing on this day. Little children are made to write their first letters on a slate with adult supervision in front of the idol of Goddess Sarsawati. The students also keep notebooks, pens near the statue of Goddess Saraswati. They also distribute sweets among the devotees and in the afternoon everybody proceeds towards delicious bhog that has Khichdi, mixed vegetable and festive favourite Payesh.
