Kota: In another shocking incident, a 19-year-old student died by suicide in her hostel room in Rajasthan’s Kota while she was preparing for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET). What is disheartening to understand that it is the eighth suicide case this year and the second such incident in the country’s ‘coaching hub’ in two days.
Identified as Soumya, the student was a resident of Lucknow and was attending private coaching classes as part of her preparation for NEET.
Reports suggest that her body was kept in a mortuary of the hospital and her family members have been informed. The post-mortem on her body will be conducted once her family arrives in Kota.
The incident comes just two days after Uruz Khan (20), a student preparing for NEET, was found hanging from the ceiling fan of his rented room in Kota on March 25. This students was from Uttar Pradesh’s Kannauj.
Uruz Khan, a resident of Kannauj in Uttar Pradesh, was staying at a rented flat in Vigyan Nagar locality where he hanged himself Monday night. The incident came to limelight after the guard of the building where Uruz was staying found him hanging from the ceiling fan.
Soon after getting information, police reached the spot, took the body into their custody before sending it to the mortuary of the nearby MBS Hospital. Police said they are investigating why the student took the extreme step.
It is shocking to understand that over 29 students died of suicide in Kota last year while they were preparing for NEET.
The development comes at a time when the Supreme Court in November last year blamed parents and not institutions for putting undue pressure on their children to excel in entrance exams such as NEET.
During the hearing of the matter, the Supreme Court last time made the judgment while it heard a plea to seek regulation of private coaching institutes.
