Chandrayaan-3 Landing Site Is ‘Shiva Shakti’: India surprised the world and made history with Chandrayaan-3 successfully landing on the south pole of the lunar surface. The location where the Vikram lander made its historic touchdown has been officially named “Shiva Shakti” after approval by the International Astronomical Union (IAU). The approval came almost seven months after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the landing site would be called “Shiva Shakti“.

Notably, the name for Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) Chandrayaan-3 landing site was approved by IAU on March 19, according to Gazetteer of Planetary Nomenclature (GPN). “Compound word from Indian mythology that depicts the masculine (‘Shiva’) and feminine (‘Shakti’) duality of nature; Landing site of Chandrayaan-3’s Vikram lander,” the Gazetteer mentioned. GPN provides information about planetary names approved by IAU.

To celebrate India’s triumph, PM Modi said that August 23, Chandrayaan-3’s landing day, would now be known as ‘National Space Day’. He made the announcement August 26 last year at the Isro Telemetry Tracking and Command Network Mission Control Complex in Bengaluru
The Prime Minister further stated that the spot on moon where Chandrayaan-2 crashed landed will be known as ‘Tiranga’, It will remind us any failure is not final,” he said.
