It’s a cheesy trailer, but it’s a bold movie for the Kannada film industry. Social media is abuzz with reports of Bhavaji, a Kannada filmmaker who has made 141 – a movie based on the love story between two young girls. The subject of lesbianism in movies is still taboo in India, but Bollywood has had some movies on the subject – including the recent Dedh Ishqiya starring diva Madhuri Dixit-Nene and Huma Qureshi, and Karan Razdan’s Girlfriend starring Isha Koppikar and Amrita Arora. International Indian filmmaker Deepa Mehta had made the controversial Fire on the subject, starring stalwars like Shabana Azmi and Nandita Das.
141 shows the romance of a foreign girl with a south Indian one. The movie stars Tanya, a Russian actress, opposite Kavya. Yahoo reports that the latest to try and break the mould is Kannada movie 141, which was shot secretly because of threats. The movie has had no support from anybody in the film industry, or even the Regional Censor Board. While the Board has cleared the movie after one-and-a-half-years of waiting, they have asked Bhavaji to refrain from excessive publicity.
141 is all set to release on September 11, 2015, in Karnataka. It will be dubbed into Telugu and Tamil and released in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Tamil Nadu on September 18. ALSO SEE: Barack Obama speaks on the US Supreme Court’s decision on Marriage Equality (Video)
We managed to find the trailer of this lesbian movie, which shows the girls dancing around with their boyfriends as well. From the trailer, 141 seems like a low budget and average movie. Hope it is able to handle this sensitive topic well, or else it will be a farce. Watch trailer of 141 here.
