On October 19, 1995, one of the most important films from the Yash Raj Films (YRF) studio was to release – Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ). Nobody knew its fate. It was the directorial debut of iconic director Yash Chopra’s young son Aditya Chopra, starring young stars Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. Although everybody loved the script of the movie, none of the cast and crew thought it would go down in cinematic history as one of the most iconic Bollywood movies of all time. As DDLJ completes exactly 20 years, YRF has shared a new documentary, DDLJ Making of the Film – Part I, II and III. Watch all three parts here and read what they are all about.

DDLJ made Aditya Chopra a force to reckon with, but it was  all to his credit, having written a script as wonderful as that at a young age of 22. His mother Pamela Chopra talks about it in the documentary, saying Adi wrote a script at 22 which was “young, emotional and traditional”. The documentary shows bits and pieces of the elusive Aditya Chopra and his style of working, his nature, his attitude.

Pam Chopra also talks about the casting of Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, and so does Uday Chopra. DDLJ was produced by Adi’s father, the late Yash Chopra. A great filmmaker himself, Yash Chopra guided Adi all the way and was present during the entire making of DDLJ.

Another personality who was a surprise on the sets was actress Juhi Chawla, one of the earliest co-stars of Shah Rukh, his partner in business and his best friend in real life. SRK’s wife Gauri Khan also makes a brief appearance.

DDLJ Making Of The Film – Part I, II and II speaks about the fun on the sets,  the film’s beginning, the moments, through fresh interviews with the cast members like Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Anupam Kher, Parmeet Sethi, Farida Jalal, Satish Shah, Mandira Bedi, Anahita Shroff, and the late Amrish Puri. The crew including the then assistant director Karan Johar, designer Manisha Malhotra, music composers Jatin-Lalit choreographers Saroj Khan and Farah Khan.

Farah only choreographed the fun song Ruk jaa oh dil deewane and she looks so young herself in the making of DDLJ! Saroj Khan shares some fun anecdotes about Kajol! Like when Saroj Khan explained a dance sequence to her, “Aap sharma jaati hain (you blush)” and Kajol asked her, “What is Sharma?” LOL! Aditya helped Kajol enact a girl feeling shy.

DDLJ Making Of The Film also shows some fan interviews and stories of how fans have got married after seeing the romantic film. SRK speaks of the onscreen understanding between Kajol and he, and Kajol shares how she hated the towel song Mere khabon mein jo aaye. “Adi, what is this shit?” she had asked Aditya Chopra.

Of course, this documentary of DDLJ takes moments from the Making of DDLJ films that were already on the YRF YouTube channel and telecast on Doordarshan years ago. The iconic train sequence – made fun of but emulated a lot – and also the pigeon feeding scene and the one where Raj (Shah Rukh) and Simran (Kajol) wake up in bed together, are all talked about.
