99 (2009), Shor in the City (2011), Go Goa Gone (2013), Happy Ending (2014) – director duo Raj & DK have carved a niche for their style of filmmaking, adding to their fan following with each film. Having worked with seasoned actors, theatre artists and relatively new cast as well in their earlier projects, the directors chose Sidharth Malhotra and Jacqueline Fernandez as their Gaurav/Rishi and Kavya for A Gentleman Sundar Susheel Risky. The film hit theatres on Friday, August 25 and promised an interesting and intriguing tale of mistaken identity. Does the film entertain and keep you hooked, as the trailer promised, or turns out to be a stereotypical drama? Read the review to know…

What’s it about?
Gaurav (Sidharth Malhotra), the sundar and susheel sales professional in Miami is on a mission to settle down in life. He has his eyes on Kavya (Jacqueline Fernandez), the gorgeous tech team member in his office. However, he is too shy to propose and too sweet and perfect to suit Kavya’s taste in men. She wants someone adventurous and risky, much like Gaurav’s ‘look alike’ Rishi in Mumbai. He works for Colonel (Suneil Shetty) and is part of a special unit that carries out secret missions under National Security Council.

But Rishi has had enough of this risky life and he wants to quit it all, much to the displeasure of Colonel. He knows too much to leave the unit. Colonel sends his men after Rishi – to find him and kill him. Gaurav on the other hand is sent to Mumbai on an assignment and he takes it up after much contesting. Will Gaurav and Rishi meet? Will Colonel’s men mistake Gaurav for Rishi, making the innocent, naïve Gaurav their target? Are Gaurav and Rishi two different people or a single individual with two different identities? Will Rishi be able to put his past behind him forever? The film keeps you intrigued with these and more questions throughout its course.

What’s hot?
A Gentleman Sundar Susheel Risky is Sidharth Malhotra’s big showcase! The hunk has been loved and admired for his looks this far and tagged ‘too straight faced’ for an actor. But the film portrays him in two different avatars, with extreme complexities and he plays both the parts convincingly. Apart from looking dishy, of course! There is a beautiful restrain in his performance which doesn’t let him go OTT trying to make the varied roles believable.
His chemistry with Jacqueline is crackling and they make a gorgeous onscreen couple.

Darshan Kumar as Yakub, Colonel’s main man who is out to eliminate Rishi, pays the fitting nemesis to Sidharth. Hussain Dalal as Dixit, Gaurav’s best friend and colleague, delivers some punchy one-liners as he plays the perfect sidekick.

The screenplay and story by Raj & D.K. (also story: Sita Menon) is gripping. It keeps you on the edge of your seat by throwing a surprise at you as soon as there is possibility of it turning predictable. The action scenes are shot in a stylized way and are easy on the eyes whereas the lovemaking scenes are sensuously captured to give you the feels.

The music by Sachin–Jigar on Vayu and Priya Saraiya’s lyrics complements the story. The tune of Disco Disco will stay along much after you come out of the theatre.

What’s not?
Jacqueline Fernandez had immense scope to play a bigger part in the story. Considering that it is set in Miami, Jackie fit perfectly with her accent and uber glamorous image. She also fits the bill to be the action heroine in a film that’s mostly an actioner. Sadly, she is reduced to looking pretty and being an eye candy! Suneil Shetty is back on the screen, in a commercial film, after a long hiatus and he’s in top form. Having a little more of him in the film wouldn’t have hurt anyone. Also, I was expecting a mother-of-all faceoffs between his Colonel and Sidharth’s Rishi in the climax, but the way the film ended was a bit underwhelming.

What to do?
A Gentleman Sundar Susheel Risky is the typical Bollywood potboiler that we have been missing in 2017. Comedy, Action, Romance, Drama, Suspense – the film has it all!
