Zara Wasim, who played young Babita Phogat in Aamir Khan’s recently released film Dangal, is making headlines off late. The young actress has caught in a controversy after she met Mehbooba Mufti, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, amid all the unrest in the valley. The 16-year-old, who is also from Kashmir, met the leader last weekend drew weird reactions from the Muslim community. Soon she got trolled on social media after which Zara issued a string of apologies as well. She denied wanting to be a role model for Kashmiri girls in her social media posts, which were deleted later on.
Zara had also posted a long confession on Facebook, which read, “This is an open confession/apology. I know that many people have been offended and displeased by my recent actions or by the people I have recently met.” She also says, ‘But I hope people can also understand there are certain circumstances that emerge which one cannot control and I hope people still remember that I’m a just a 16-year-old girl and I hope you treat me accordingly. I’m sorry for what I did but it was not a deliberate decision and I really hope people can forgive me.”
But amid all the negative reactions, what was surprising is that a number of people came in support of Zara Wasim. B-town also came forward to support the actress and the list includes her onscreen father Aamir Khan. The actress was being told by everyone that she need not be apologetic of whatever she did as she only made everyone proud. Aamir Khan has been vocal about his feelings towards Zara’s situation. He took to Facebook and wrote, “I have read Zaira’s statement, and I can understand and imagine what lead her to make that statement. Zaira, I want you to know that we are all with you. The beauty is that bright, young, talented, hardworking, respectful, caring and courageous kids like you are a role model for kids not only in India, but across the world. You certainly are a role model for me! May god bless you. Love. Aamir. P.S. : I appeal to everyone to now leave her alone and respect the fact that she is just a 16 yr old girl trying her best to deal with life.”
Real life Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari, the wrestlers on whom Dangal was based, also came out in support of Zara. They said, “She has played us on screen and has done a great job. She is an inspiration to many young girls. She has miles to go… She doesn’t need to be scared or apologize to anyone. Even we have faced many difficulties and challenges in life an that has made us stronger. We want to tell her that we and the entire nation is with her” (ALSO READ: Dangal girl Zaira Wasim receives support from Anupam Kher, Barkha Dutt, Omar Abdullah, Javed Akhtar after Facebook post goes viral)
