Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar’s Toilet: Ek Prem Katha released on August 11, and it has been on a great run ever since then. Although the film has received mixed reviews, but that didn’t stop people from going to the theatres over the weekend. The box office wasn’t looking too good since the past few months despite the releases from Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan, but Akshay has managed to break that jinx, but not completely. You see, Toilet: Ek Prem Katha earned Rs 13.10 crore on its first day, and saw a growth for the next two days as it collected Rs 17.10 crore and Rs 21.15 crore on Saturday and Sunday respectively. So as of now Toilet: Ek Prem Katha stands at a total of Rs 51.45 crore at the domestic box office. And not to forget, we still have Independence Day tomorrow. And since it’s a national holiday, we can surely expect the chart to show an upward trend.

With this, Akshay has managed to beat Shah Rukh Khan’s Jab Harry Met Sejal that released last week. The film, which also starred Anushka Sharma as the female lead managed to collect Rs 15.25 crore on its opening day. But unlike Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, it didn’t show any growth over the weekend, and earned just Rs 15 crore and Rs 15.50 crore on Saturday and Sunday respectively. So Rs 45.75 crore is all that Jab Harry Met Sejal earned over the first weekend. While Akshay might have outdone SRK, he didn’t manage to beat Salman Khan at the box office as Tubelight opened at 21.15 crore, and Rs 21.17 crore and Rs 22.45 crore on Saturday and Sunday respectively. The total box office collection of Tubelight by the end of the weekend stood at Rs 64.7 crore. Of course, it was way too low when compared to Salman’s earlier Eid releases, but on the brighter side, that’s one record neither Shah Rukh nor Akshay have managed to break this year.
