Pakistani singer and actress Meesha Shafi has accused Ali Zafar of sexually harassing her on more than one occasions. The two of them have worked together on several occasions and have known each other for a long time now. Meesha took to her Twitter handle to share her story as she stated she couldn’t stay mum about it anymore. Meesha tweeted, “Sharing this because I believe that by speaking out about my own experience of sexual harassment, I will break the culture of silence that permeates through our society. It is not easy to speak out. But it is harder to stay silent. My conscience will not allow it anymore #MeToo.”
She made a revelation that startled everybody. “I have been subjected, on more than one occasion, to sexual harassment of a physical nature at the hands of a colleague from my industry: Ali Zafar. These incidences did not happen when I was young, or just entering the industry. This happened to me despite the fact that I am an empowered, accomplished woman who is known for speaking her mind! This happened to me as a mother of two children,” she said. Furthermore, she said, “It has been an extremely traumatic experience for me and my family. Ali is someone I have known for many years and someone who I have shared the stage with. I feel betrayed by his behaviour and his attitude and I know that I am not alone.”Initially, Zafar had not responded to the claims. However, now he took to his Instagram account to break his silence on the issue. He denied any or all claims of sexual harassment alleged by the Pakistani songstress. Take a look at his statement below.
This accusation has not only marred Ali’s reputation in Pakistan but also in India given he has done films here as well. He has starred in films like Kill Dil with Ranveer Singh and Parineeti Chopra, Mere Brother Ki Dulhan with Katrina Kaif, London Paris New York with Aditi Rao Hydari, Dear Zindagi with Alia Bhatt to name the significant ones. Even after giving out his statement, his comments’ section on Instagram is filled with hateful comments by fans. While one of them said, “Being half naked and then defend yourself on sexual harassment… this is wtf logic i have ever gone through”, another one said, “Considering what a male dominated and sexist country Pakistan is, why would a famous mother of two publicly address such a taboo issue and lie? She’s not lying. Why would be bring this “shame” on her? Which really isn’t shame in my opinion, it’s courage. Men are pigs, particularly Pakistani and Arab men and you must pay for your shit behavior.” Well, stay tuned to this space as we keep you updated with more deets on this issue.
