Throwing some light at the #MeToo movement, Pakistan singer and actress Meesha Shafi has accused singer-actor Ali Zafar of sexual harassment, not once but multiple times. The 36-year-old actress, who has worked with Ali Zafar on several occasions, has known the actor for a long time. Meesha took to Twitter to share her story as she stated she couldn’t stay mum about it anymore. Meesha wrote, “Sharing this because I believe that by speaking out about my own experience of sexual harassment, I will break the culture of silence that permeates through our society. It is not easy to speak out. But it is harder to stay silent. My conscience will not allow it anymore #MeToo.”
Following this, a number of women came forward with similar claims against Ali Zafar, who has issued a clarification in his defence. In an interview with The News, Meesha talked about her ordeal by saying that Ali behaved inappropriately with her on two incidents. The singer-actress said that she ignored it the first time, but soon after it happened the second time in a jam room. “I was jamming with my band in Lahore and the organisers insisted that he was trying to get in touch. It started turning into a thing, and I was being seen as difficult or a diva, I got such feelers. I was avoiding him. I was asked to jam, figure out songs, scale and it happened while we were jamming,” Meesha was quoted as saying.
Amid this serious issue, two other women who were reportedly present at the same jam session have completely denied any such incident. Aqsa Ali took to Facebook and wrote that she was in utter shock when she heard of Meesha’s allegations. Aqsa asserts that Ali is a genuine person, who treats people around him nicely and has always been a support system for everyone. Another woman, Kanza also took a stand for Ali and her Facebook post is proof Zafar is innocent.
