A week after a fan made a public appeal to Ajay Devgn about not promoting tobacco, the actor spoke out on the issue. While promoting his upcoming film De De Pyaar De De at an event, Ajay maintained that he doesn’t promote any product that has tobacco but can’t ask the company to stop making other products. He added that he is in touch with the fan who is battling cancer and his contract with the company mentions he won’t promote tobacco.
Revealing the details of his popular advertisement and the contract, Ajay told the media that he promotes ‘ilaaichi (cardamom) and not tobacco. The Singham star added that even his contract says he is associated with the promotion of a non-tobacco product. However, he maintained that he can’t take the responsibility of the company which might be dealing in the tobacco-related products. Ajay was quoted by PTI saying, “I have always maintained in my contracts that I am not promoting tobacco. Whatever the ads are, they are of ilaaichi (cardamom) and my contract says it will be non-tobacco. So if the same company is selling something else, I don’t know what to do.”
Ajay also said that he understands his duty as an actor and he makes sure none of his characters is seen smoking just for style unless it’s the requirement of the role. He took the example of his character in De De Pyaar De and said he is playing a regular businessman who doesn’t need to smoke but while playing a goon or a gangster, he has to smoke on-screen to stay true to his character and appear realistic to his audience. Ajay explained, “In my latest film, De De Pyaar De, I’m playing a regular man who does not smoke. But if I’m playing a Malik bhai in a film like Company (2002), how will it be without smoking? Without taking any names, we were playing somebody (real) who smoked. So it would have been wrong to not show it as it would not be true to the role.”
Meanwhile, De De Pyaar De is directed by Akiv Ali and also features Tabu and Rakul Preet Singh apart from Ajay. The film is releasing this week at the Box Office.
