Internationally, the film came face-to-face with a controversy as it was banned in Kuwait and Pakistan due to its subject. The Central Board of Film Censors in Pakistan refused to give a No-Objection Certificate to Akshay’s film.
Directed by R Balki and produced by Twinke Khanna, Pad Man tells the life story of a Tamil Nadu-based social activist Arunachalam Muruganantham, who revolutionised the concept of menstrual hygiene in rural India by creating a low-cost sanitary napkins machine. The flick, which also stars Sonam Kapoor, earned a decent Rs 81.82 crore at the box office. Arunachalam’s story was also adapted in a segment of Twinkle’s second book The Legend Of Lakshmi Prasad.
Pad Man also featured Radhika Apte and Sonam Kapoor in pivotal roles. The film was loved and appreciated by the Indian audience. It also gained massive popularity after the PadMan Challenge where many celebrities shared pictures of themselves holding sanitary pads on social media. This challenge was a promotional activity that was started by Akshay and his wife Twinkle, who also produced the film.
On the professional front, Akshay Kumar is currently shooting for Housefull 4. He will also be seen Good News with Kareena Kapoor.
Akshay has been one of Bollywood’s most successful actor and has been appreciated lately for his choice of films. His focus these days is to do films on social issues and biopics. His recent release Gold did great at the Box Office. He will next be seen in Rajinikanth’s most anticipated film of the year 2.0. The teaser of the film that was released earlier this month garnered a lot of positive response from the viewers. Fans are now looking forward to watching the film on the Big Screen.
Twinkle, on the other hand, is busy with the promotion of her book Pyjamas Are Forgiving. The novel is her third book in three years after the non-fiction Mrs Funnybones, and The Legend of Lakshmi Prasad, which is a collection of short stories.
