Ali had accused Meesha of damaging his reputation through false allegations. The notice read, “The tweet dated 19.04.2018 and the Instep Articled dated 21.04.2018 are false, slanderous, and defamatory statements, stand published and originate from the defendant, therefore, have caused tremendous injury to the Plaintiff’s reputation, goodwill, livelihood; being attempts to tarnish the good image of the plaintiff.”

In the breakdown of the Rs 1 billion damages, the notice read: “Be that as it may, that due to the defamatory campaign being spearheaded by the defendant, the plaintiff besides special damages in case of defamation further suffered the following damages: Mental torture Rs 2 crore, Loss of contacts Rs 8 crore, Loss of reputation/goodwill Rs 50 crore, Loss of business opportunities Rs 40 crore.”

It also points out that Shafi, “has associated herself with the global #meToo movement, with one of the launchers of the #meToo movement ‘Rose McGowan’ labelling the defendant as a ‘heroin for our times’. It also demands “an apology using the same social media platform of Twitter proclaiming our client’s innocence.”Actor Shafi, 36, had earlier confirmed that she had received a notice sent by Ali’s council, asking her to delete the tweet and to apologise on Social media. If she failed to do so then she will be filed 1 billion defamation case.

It was during April that Shafi had shared the post on Twitter accused Ali of physically harassing her on “more than one occasions. Her tweet read, “This happened to me despite the fact that I am empowered, accomplished woman who is known for speaking her mind!” Zafar had a quick reply to this and denied all the allegations and threatened to “take legal actions against the actress.” Zafar too tweeted on this matter and shared a tweet that read, “I intend to take this through the court of law, and to address this professionally and seriously rather than to lodge any accusations here.”
