Veteran actor Alok Nath has been granted anticipatory bail in the Vinta Nanda rape and sexual harassment case by the Sessions Court at Dindoshi in Mumbai. Alok had applied for bail after writer-producer Vinta registered a complaint against him in October at the Oshiwara Police Station for sexually assaulting her nearly two decades back. Subsequently, the Mumbai Police filed a rape case against Alok under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Alok, who was the lead actor in TV serial Tara in which Vinta was the writer and producer, had filed a plea for pre-arrest bail before Additional Sessions Judge SS Oza on December 13. He had earlier filed a defamation suit of Rs 1 against Vinta for defaming him.

The whole matter had started after Vinta narrated the ordeal she went through via a Facebook post at a time when the #MeToo movement was going full swing in India, and she had also taken the legal route to deal with the case.

However, in November last year, she had revealed that she had been asked to undergo medical tests to help investigate the alleged incident that happened nearly two decades ago.

Alok, on the other hand, was served notice by Cine & TV Artist Association (CINTAA) to appear before it and give them an explanation. But when he failed to appear before its executive committee, he was expelled and his membership was revoked. He had earlier responded to the rape allegations by saying that he neither denied nor accepted the charges levelled against him and that it (the rape) “might have happened but someone else would have done it”.

Alok Nath is not the only celebrity who has been accused of sexual misconduct, as following actress Tanushree Dutta’s accusations of harassment against veteran actor Nana Patekar, many other women have come out to name and shame a good number of well known personalities.
