One of the most anticipated films of the year, Abhishek Varman’s period drama Kalank has surpassed the opening day collection of Kesari, Gully Boy and Total Dhamaal and became the highest opener of 2019 so far.
The film has registered a business of Rs 21.60 crore on the first day. Karan Johar shared the news on Twitter and wrote, “Eternal love always wins. ‘Kalank’ becomes the highest opener of 2019! Watch it in cinemas now”.
Trade expert Taran Adarsh listed how it surpassed the numbers of other films of 2019. He tweeted, “Opening Day business of 2019 — ‘Kalank’ Rs 21.60 crore (Wednesday), ‘Kesari’ Rs 21.06 crore (Thursday), ‘Gully Boy’ Rs 19.40 crore (Thursday), ‘Total Dhamaal’ Rs 16.50 crore… Note: Hindi films. Rs 10 crore plus openers included in the list…’Kalank’ is the biggest opener of Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt to date”.
Kalank is a period drama set in the 1940s, in the era of India-Pakistan partition. The team even traveled to Kargil to shoot a few scenes. Along with the varied hues of love, the period drama highlights the trials and tribulations of love with the spotlight on communal tensions.
The movie has opened to mixed reviews, with some critics calling it overcrowded and some calling it “drop-dead gorgeous.” The film, which released on a holiday like Mahavir Jayanti, is set to grow at the box office with an extended weekend and the holiday of Good Friday.
Kalank has had the highest opening internationally of 2019 and has beaten the previous best of Padmavaat and Dangal in the UK with an estimated figure of 141,000 euros. Australia too has taken the best opening of 2019 with AUD 128,000.
Apart from the box office, the movie has become a favourite on social media with several memes and dialogues from the film getting popular in the digital world.
The film has an ensemble cast of Madhuri Dixit Nene, Sanjay Dutt, Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Sonakshi Sinha, and Aditya Roy Kapur.
Directed by Abhishek Varman, produced by Karan Johar, Sajid Nadiadwala, Hiroo Yash Johar, and Apoorva Mehta, and co-produced by Fox star studios, the film released on Wednesday, April 17.
