The massive hype and stellar cast of Abhishek Varman directorial Kalank, starring Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt, Aditya Roy Kapur, Sonakshi Sinha, Sanjay Dutt and Madhuri Dixit has borne the fruit of its terrific promotions as it minted Rs 21.60 crores on day 1 of its release. Though the movie opened to mixed reviews on Wednesday, the figures narrate a different story altogether.

Given its huge grosser, the movie has turned out to be not just Varun and Alia’s biggest opener till date but also emerged as the biggest opener of 2019 so far. Sharing the figures on his Instagram handle, film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh wrote, “#Kalank starts with a bang… Emerges biggest opener of 2019 *so far*… Plexes terrific… Impressive cast and hype + massive screen count [4000] + #MahavirJayanti holiday have contributed to a big total… Wed ₹ 21.60 cr. The film has been into buzz ever since its trailer released. Alia and Varun’s promotional events have also added to the excitement of the audience. Releasing on a Wednesday instead of the customary Friday, Kalank’s release was taken by cinephiles as a respite during their mid-week blues. The film had become one of the much-awaited films of the year and fans had already booked their tickets, well in advance to watch the period drama first-day first show.

Though B-town attended the premiere of the film on April 16, in Mumbai, the audience got to see the multi-starrer film only on the 17th. Taking to their Twitter accounts later, the users poured out their reaction and while some could not stop praising the climax of the film, others praised the performance of Alia and Varun.

The film is a period drama set in the era of India-Pakistan partition. Directed by Abhishek Varman, the movie is produced by Karan Johar, Sajid Nadiadwala, Hiroo Yash Johar and Apoorva Mehta and co-produced by Fox star studios.
