The Sunday collection of Kalank, with no surprise, is lower than expected. The Karan Johar-produced film earned Rs 9.75 crore on its first Sunday finishing the opening weekend at Rs 66.03 crore. With a two-day extension in the release, Kalank was expected to draw more audience to theatres and cross the benchmark of Rs 100 crore within its first weekend. However now, with the kind of response it has garnered from the audience, collecting Rs 100 crore even in its lifetime run seems difficult. The first weekend Box Office breakup of Kalank is as follows:

Wednesday: Rs 21.60 cr
Thursday: Rs 11.45 cr
Friday: Rs 11.60 cr
Saturday: Rs 9.75 cr
Sunday: Rs 11.63 cr

Total: Rs 66.03

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh revealed the latest collection of Kalank and posted, “#Kalank is rejected… Has a lacklustre *extended* opening weekend… Will find it difficult to sustain on weekdays… Arrival of #AvengersEndgame [on Fri] will hit biz hard… Wed 21.60 cr, Thu 11.45 cr, Fri 11.60 cr, Sat 9.75 cr, Sun 11.63 cr. Total: ₹ 66.03 cr. India biz.” (sic)

Kalank is a period drama and boasts off an ensemble cast. Directed by Abhishek Varman, it features Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditya Roy Kapur, Madhuri Dixit and Sanjay Dutt in important roles. Kalank is set in the backdrop of India-Pakistan partition. Its first weekend collection is even lower than that of Kesari (Rs 78.07 cr) and Gully Boy (Rs 72.45 cr) despite the fact that while both these films released on Thursday, Kalank was released a day prior – on Wednesday. Here’s the breakup as shared by Adarsh in his tweet:

“EXTENDED Opening Weekend…
⭐️ #Kesari: ₹ 78.07 cr / 3600 screens / Thu to Sun biz
⭐️ #GullyBoy: ₹ 72.45 cr / 3350 screens / Thu to Sun biz
⭐️ #Kalank: ₹ 66.03 cr / 4000 screens / Wed to Sun biz
Note: ⭐️ #TotalDhamaal [traditional Fri-Sun release]: ₹ 62.40 cr / 3700 screens” (sic)

The story of the film, as revealed by KJo himself, was conceived by his late father, filmmaker Yash Johar. The team of Kalank did heavy promotions for the film. The songs – First Class, Ghar More Pardesiya, Tabaah Ho Gaye and others, created just the right amount of curiosity among the viewers. The grand sets and the larger-than-life appeal of the film added to the buzz. However, Kalank couldn’t manage to receive good word-of-mouth after its release that affected its Box Office performance.
