Actor Kangana Ranaut had announced last year that she was returning to her mentor, Anurag Basu, with a film tentatively titled as Imali. Now, news daily reports that the actor has backed out from the film citing date issues. The romantic film was scheduled to go on the floors in November last year. However, everything began to go haywire when Kangana had to reshoot Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi. Soon after completing the period drama, the actor moved to work on Panga with Ashwini Iyer Tiwary. Now, she has signed the Jayalalithaa biopic and has got a chockablock year ahead.
Talking to DNA about not doing Imali, Kangana said that she had a word with Basu, who understood her situation. Kangana also revealed that she has to start paying attention to her next directorial venture, therefore, there’s no time for the Anurag Basu-film. She said, “Last year, when I announced Panga and Imali together, Anurag Basu’s film was supposed to go on floors in November 2018. But I had to direct and reshoot Manikarnika: The Queen Of Jhansi. So, I had to push Imali. I was also meaning to be a director for a while, so I couldn’t have said no to this. Meanwhile, Panga had already started and I couldn’t not do that.”
The actor added that since her first attempt at direction has impressed the audience, she will continue walking on the same route. Kangana said, “Manikarnika has done very well, so I want to take my directorial career further. I can’t not direct now. I had signed the Jayalalithaa biopic because it’s a strong character and in sync with whatever I’m doing with regards to women empowerment.”
Talking about her conversation with Anurag over leaving his film, the actor said, “Anurag and I have spoken about it. I feel extremely bad because Imali was giving me an opportunity to work with my mentor again, but I’m on the verge of announcing my own film in a few weeks from now. That has taken a lot of my time and I have conveyed it to Anurag, who understood my situation.”
Kangana had debuted in Bollywood with Gangster, which was directed by Anurag Basu in the year 2006.
