Filmmaker Anurag Singh directed and Akshay Kumar starrer Kesari has finished its first weekend total at Rs 78.07 crore. The film earned Rs 21.51 crore on Sunday, taking the total to little less than Rs 80 crore. Kesari was expected to fare around Rs 100 crore in its four-day extended opening weekend. Even with Rs 78.07 crore, the film’s collection has emerged as the highest opening weekend this year. The Parineeti Chopra starrer also registered the highest Day 1 collection for a film this year by earning Rs 21.06 crore.
One of the reasons for fall in Kesari’s collection is the launch of the latest season of IPL 2019 last weekend. The film is still attracting the audience in great numbers to the theatre. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh shared the latest Box Office breakup of Kesari. He took to Twitter and wrote, “#Kesari puts up an impressive total… North circuits are superb… While the 4-day total is good, the biz on Sat and Sun should’ve been higher, since the word of mouth is excellent… Thu 21.06 cr, Fri 16.75 cr, Sat 18.75 cr, Sun 21.51 cr. Total: ₹ 78.07 cr. India biz.” (sic)
He also mentioned the role of the IPL in causing below-than-expected growth. His tweet read, “Section of the industry feels #IPL2019 curtailed the growth of #Kesari on Sat [evening] and Sun… Two days that could’ve made a biggg difference to the *extended* weekend total… Weekdays pivotal… Strong numbers and solid trending [Mon-Thu] are a must.” (sic)
The film crossed Rs 50 crore at Box Office on day 3 itself while it surpassed the benchmark of Rs 75 crore on its day 4. With no other big release giving a threat to its run at the ticket window, Kesari should do well in the coming week and cross the mark of Rs 150 crore within its week 1.
Kesari is based on the real-life story of the epic Battle Of Saragarhi that was fought between 21 Sikh soldiers under British army and around 10000 Afghan troopers. The battle is considered as one of the bravest last stands in the world’s history. Kesari also features Parineeti Chopra in a brief role. The film is produced by Dharma Productions and Sajid Nadiadwala’s Nadiadwala Grandsons Entertainment. Akshay’s Sikh avatar and the real story of valour took social media by storm. The film’s team received a great response that has now got converted into terrific word-of-mouth.
