The trailer of the Balasaheb Thackeray’s biopic starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui has not just gathered criticism for spreading communal hate but slammed lead actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui and this time, the actor from Uttar Pradesh received flak from Gangs of Wasseypur co-star Richa Chadha. Taking a jibe at Nawaz in a Twitter post, Richa called him bipolar for his role in the movie Thackeray.
Tweeting in a cryptic manner, using his screen name Faisal from Gangs of Wasseypur, Richa wrote, “अरे ई हमरा फैजल तो बाईपोलर निकला बे !” (Oh my Faizal turned out to be bipolar). The jibe is clearly aimed at Nawaz for essaying the role of the controversial politician in the upcoming movie whose trailer released a few days back.
Earlier, Rang De Basanti actor Siddharth too had taken offense over some dialogues in the Marathi trailer which he claimed were anti-South Indians.
Blasting the trailer in his Twitter rant, Siddharth had written, “The conveniently un-subtitled #Marathi trailer of #Thackeray. So much hate sold with such romance and heroism (Music, tiger roars, applause, jingoism). No solidarity shown to millions of South Indians and immigrants who make #Mumbai great. #HappyElections!” (sic)
In another tweet, later in the day, the South actor wrote, “Nawazuddin has repeated ‘Uthao lungi bajao pungi’ (lift the lungi and *’#$ him) in the film #Thackeray. Clearly hate speech against South Indians… In a film glorifying the person who said it! Are you planning to make money out of this propaganda? Stop selling hate! Scary stuff!” (sic)
Five minutes after this, Siddharth again tweeted, pointing out that, “Poetic justice is when a Muslim actor from UP gets to play the part of the revered Marathi bigot in a propaganda film.”
Also starring Amrita Rao in the role of Balasaheb’s wife, Thackeray has been written by journalist and Member of Parliament Sanjay Raut and directed by Abhijit Panse. Slated to release on January 25, the film has been shot in Hindi and Marathi and will be dubbed in English.
