Neena Gupta who was last seen in one of the most acclaimed films of 2018 Badhaai Ho, recently stated that she had to “suffer” professionally because of the personal choices she had made.
In an interview with news agency IANS, Neena said, “I had a child out of wedlock and that proved me as a strong-headed woman, which I am. But back then, a strong woman could only play a vamp. So, I ended up playing mostly negative roles in films.” Neena Gupta was earlier in a relationship with cricketer Viv Richards and they have a daughter Masaba Gupta who is now an ace designer. “I suffered as an actress because of my public image. So, I think it is important to maintain a certain image in the public eye to get roles in cinema,” she added.
Talking about society, Neena said, “The society has not changed even today and that is why I want to tell all the aspiring actresses especially – do not be very candid at your professional space. I really suffered”.
“Girls, if you want to smoke, do not smoke in public or do not be physically friendly to a male friend also… All these are perceived as a sign of strong, liberated, independent woman… that might just offer you a certain type of role,” she added.
Neena started her career in the film industry with the 1982 film Gandhi. She also featured in films like Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, Khalnayak, Mandi among many others. She has recently been applauded for her performance in Badhaai Ho which did wonders at the Box Office. The film also starred Ayushmann Khurrana, Sanya Malhotra and Gajraj Rao in pivotal roles.
The story revolves around a family where a middle-aged married couple (played by Neena Gupta and Gajraj Rao) expect another child. It beautifully showcases how they deal with society. Ayushmann plays the role of the elder son of the couple while Sanya plays his love interest. The film also stars Surekha Sikri and Shardul Rana in pivotal roles.
