Filmmaker Shoojit Sircar is bringing Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmann Khurrana together in his next directorial. It’s a quirky comedy set in Lucknow and written by Juhi Chaturvedi who has earlier penned Piku, Vicky Donor and October for the director. The film has been titled Gulabo Sitabo which is a colloquial term used in Uttar Pradesh. Sircar announced his film in his latest interview with a daily and explained how he managed to cast AB and Ayushmann together.

While speaking to Mumbai Mirror, Sircar revealed that he has been working with Juhi on the script for a long time and when it shaped up finally, he took it to the two actors who immediately loved the script and agreed to come on board. The director mentioned that both the actors made a quick run through their dates and adjusted their schedule showing extreme enthusiasm. He was quoted by the daily saying, “I thought it would take some time to develop and take it forward, but everyone was so enthusiastic to work on this script, they figured out their dates and here we are, planning to release the film this year itself.” He praised the writer and said there’s no doubt to her trademark style of writing that ensures entertainment and quirkiness.

When asked about the selection of the title, Sircar didn’t give much away. He told the daily that it’s an interesting term that’s used in Lucknow but “regarding its association with the story… you will have to wait and watch the film to know more.”

Notably, Gulabo and Sitabo are the names of glove puppets which are made of paper-mache and are decked with colourful clothes and trinkets. Reportedly, the film has two women – one named Sitabo who’s an overworked and stressed wife while the other named Gulabo is a stunning, attractive mistress. More details on the film are awaited.

Meanwhile, Sircar is currently busy filming his next, a biopic on revolutionary Udham Singh with Vicky Kaushal. The film will be released next year. Both Ayushmann and senior Bachchan are shooting for their upcoming films. The former is working with Bhumi Pednekar and Yami Gautam in Amar Kaushik’s Bala, the latter is filming thriller movie Chehre with Emraan Hashmi and Rhea Chakraborty.
