Thackeray featuring actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui is based on the life of Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray. The movie got a decent opening and minted Rs 6 crore. The box office numbers were shared by trade analyst Taran Adarsh on the social media. According to him, the film performed well in Maharashtra, which was expected from it. It clashed with Kangana Ranaut starrer Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi. Thackeray received mixed response from the cinema lovers but Nawaz impressed everyone with his performance.

Taran took to the micro-blogging site Twitter and wrote, “#Thackeray has scored in #Maharashtra specifically… #Marathi version has collected very well… #RepublicDay holiday [today] should help escalate its biz… Fri ₹ 6 cr. India biz. #Hindi #Marathi.”

At the trailer launch, he talked about his look and said, “I know that people are talking about my look and the credit goes to the make-up artiste. A good professional make-up artiste can give me the look, but how I am portraying the character depends on how I am preparing for it. I have honestly attempted to do that.”

Nawaz is being praised for his performance but he was not the first choice for the film. While interacting with Mid-day, casting director Rohan Mapuskar made the revelation that Irrfan Khan was being considered for the role. He said, “Director Abhijit Panse, Sanjay Raut and I were brainstorming on who we’d like to cast and were contemplating [roping in] Irrfan. We had [superimposed] his image to see if it matched that of Mr Thackeray, and were convinced. Irrfan, who was busy with another film, said he could only consider it after two to three months.”

The movie has been written by Sanjay Raut and directed by Abhijit Panse.
