The box office of 2018 began with Tiger Zinda Hai romping its way clear of any other competitors. Now that there have been the year’s first releases, they too seem to have been overshadowed by the Salman Khan – Katrina Kaif action thriller. Saif Ali Khan’s Kaalakaandi finally released in theatres, alongside Anurag Kashyap directorial Mukkabaaz and the Zareen Khan starrer 1921 on January 12. The films did not have the best of starts they would’ve hoped for.

Saif Ali Khan’s Kaalakaandi has received some below par reviews, with his performance the only respite in the film. After earning Rs 1.40 crore on Sunday the film made a total of Rs 3.85 crore on its opening weekend. Meanwhile, Anurag Kashyap’s Mukkabaaz also had a slow start, but picked up later after rave reviews, earning Rs 1.71 crore on Sunday, bringing their weekend total to Rs 4.04 crore. On the other hand, the Zareen Khan horror flick has seen a good trend at the box office. Among the other releases, the film started strongest, with its genre being a crowd favourite. 1921 earned Rs 2.80 crore on Sunday, bringing its total to Rs 6.45 crore in its opening weekend.
