Starring Emraan Hashmi, upcoming movie, Cheat India‘s trailer is out and it comes as a much-needed relief from his “serial killer” image or the tag of being a master of B-grade murder mysteries. Bankrolled by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, Tanuj Garg, Atul Kasbekar and Parveen Hashmi, the movie is expected to be content heavy with a good story, as is hinted by the trailer.

Playing the lead, Emraan’s role as a shrewd scamster, who fraudulently gets students to crack varied entrance exams and get them into their dream colleges, reminds of Ranjit Singh alias Ranjit Don, whose stories of ‘settings’ jolted the entire Indian education system in the early 2000s.

The two minutes long trailer begins with a commentary by Emraan about the rat race to crack entrance exams of typical courses like engineering and MBA and the struggles to get into their dream colleges. The trailer shows him in a fresh look – neatly combed hair, a tilak on his forehead and dressed in a pair of neat shirt and pant.

Playing a middleman, Emraan acts as the Robin Hood of the education system by taking money from the rich and filling the pockets of the needy. It is believed by Emraan’s character in the movie that hard work is meant for salaried people while the rich and the powerful only do scams.

Emraan is seen at the onset of the trailer, cracking a deal with an aspirant by offering him to become a ‘nakalmand’ (cheat) from ‘akalmand’ (intelligent). With bundles of money on the table, the youngster is seen giving in to the temptation and later sit for exams for the less bright in exchange for money. When caught and put in the dock, he is far from considering his racket unlawful and defends his resolve of helping the needy.

In an interview earlier to IANS, Emraan Hashmi said, “The script and title of Cheat India are supremely powerful. This is among the most engaging and riveting stories I’ve read in a while and I am thrilled to be essaying what I believe will be a landmark role in my filmography.” Sharing the trailer today on Twitter, Emraan wrote, “On your ‘marks’, get set, CHEAT….. The #CheatIndiaTrailer you’ve been waiting for.”

While the trailer is free from any cliches and loud proclamations and the shots are clean, the story is predictable. Also, we do not get any proper glimpse of the female lead, Shreya Dhanwanthary, in the trailer released today. Produced by the makers of Neerja and Tumhari Sulu, the Soumik Sen directorial, Cheat India, is scheduled to hit the theaters on January 25, 2019.
