Game of Thrones is one of the most popular American television shows, which also airs in India on Hotstar, Star World and Star HD every Monday. While we await the fourth episode of the latest season (season 7) of GOT ‘The Spoils of War’, the episode has been leaked three days before its TV debut and now, the hackers, who have also leaked other episodes of HBO shows besides GOT, have now threatened to release more episodes on August 6.
Reportedly, the hacker group has written, in an automated email reply to Variety.com, that it will leak the episodes gradually every week. The message also read that the next episode will be released this Sunday at 12 GMT (5 pm IST).
Altaf Halde, MD, Kaspersky Lab, termed the incident to be a new phenomenon. He told IANS, “The HBO attack was relatively a new phenomenon. At first and throughout the ’90s and early 2000s, most hackers intended primarily on vandalism attacks rather than for making money. But with time, it became clear that cyber attacks could bring with them serious money.”
He further added, “The value of such a cyber hack is entirely dependent on how much attention it can bring. Hacking into HBO and stealing Game of Thrones piggybacks on one of the most active talking points in the world. Entertainment companies are like governments and hacking groups in that their intellectual property is of interest to everyone.”
Meanwhile, Richard Plepler, President and CEO, HBO, commented on whether or not the personal data has been accessed by the hackers. He said, “At this time, we do not believe that our email system as a whole has been compromised but the forensic review is ongoing.”
Reportedly, the hacker group had released HBO data of 1.5 TB which includes the script of the fifth episode of Game of Thrones and also unreleased episodes of two other shows that airs on HBO – Ballers and Room 104. Post this, the channel started an investigation on this matter.
The entertainment industry has been the victim of illegal hacking and piracy since a long time now. We know that the links, that are up on the torrent sites, are doing the rounds on various social media platforms and if you’re a die hard fan of GOT, you are one of them to have received the link on your Whatsapp or Facebook. While we could do nothing about illegal hacking, we can refrain from downloading the pirated episode uploaded on the internet and wait till it is aired officially, is the least we could do.
