Irrfan Khan and Saba Qamar starrer Hindi Medium which was a swipe at the Indian education system has landed in legal trouble. The makers of a 2014 Bengali film, Ramdhanu, are seeking an injunction against Hindi Medium. Bengali filmmaker Shiboprasad Mukherjee has moved to court claiming the film’s content has been lifted from Ramdhanu. A restraining order has been issued by the district judge of Alipore, West Bengal against the screening of Hindi Medium on any viewing platform, including television.
Citing the reason behind their late reaction to this, one of the directors of Ramdhanu, Shiboprasad Mukherjee told Mid-day, “Our film Posto was releasing at the same time as Hindi Medium, so our primary focus was to ensure a smooth release for our project. We finally watched Hindi Medium three weeks after its release and found striking similarities with Ramdhanu. The story of Ramdhanu revolves around a worried mother who is desperate to get her son in a reputed school. So, she along with her husband go to extreme lengths to get their son admitted in the best school. The makers of Ramdhanu have claimed copyright infringement against Hindi Medium, which has striking similarities in the storyline.
The co-producer of Hindi Medium Bhushan Kumar maintains his stance on the originality of his film. He said he hasn’t seen the Bengali film but is confident his film is original. He was quoted saying, “Going by the plot and summary of the film that I just read, I’m confident of the originality of Hindi Medium,” he also added, “I will be happy to go through legal channels to prove this and I hope this furore isn’t owing to the success of Hindi Medium.” The producer of the Hindi Medium, Bhushan Kumar says “We haven’t received the order from the court. Once we do, we will be challenging it.”
