Ayushmann Khurrana has grown to become the quintessential essence of slice of life dramas. His upcoming movie, ‘Bareilly Ki Barfi‘ which stars Kriti Sanon as the lead character ‘Bitti’ and Rajkummar Rao as author Pritam Vidrohi, seems to be no different. The trailer reveals that it’s a sweet romantic comedy although Ayushmann insists it’s more of a situational comedy than a rom com.
In the movie, Ayushmann Khurrana essays the role of Chirag Dubey, an owner of a printing press who falls head over heels in love with the outspoken and straightforward, Bitti. Kriti’s character in the movie, Bitti, is a ‘moofat’ who is carefree and wishes to settle down with someone who completely understands her. She comes across a book titled, ‘Bareilly Ki Barfi’ which she easily connects with. Since reading the book, her only wish remains to meet its author who is none other than Pritam Vidrohi (Rajkummar), who works in Chirag aka Ayushmann’s printing press. When Chirag comes to know what Bitti feels for Pritam, he concocts a plan to change Pritam from a non-chalant, unworldly guy to a carefree, unaffected and funny person, so that she hates him and falls for Chirag instead. Although Ayushmann has more or less been cast as ‘the good boy’ in comedy dramas that are rooted in reality, this movie has him play an aggressive character, a bully of sorts, which is very different from the roles he’s portrayed on screen so far. “This is the first time I’m essaying an aggressive guy, a bully in the film because I have never done that in real life. As a part of growing up, of course you get bullied. But, in my career, I have never done a role like that. Having said that, he is not an outright bully, probably he is a selfish guy, but he has his vulnerable moments, as well. I wouldn’t call it a negative character. But yes, it’s different for me for sure,” said.
He further said that his character isn’t very likable in the movie, which made it all the more challenging for him to play it. “Chirag is not a very likable character. He is vulnerable at the same time. So how to tread that line of vulnerability and being slightly ‘not likable’ in the film, while also having a charcter like Pritam Vidrohi who you’re competing with—someone who’s much more funny and liked– was challenging,” he said.
