Today was a day of rejoicing for many in the LGBT community after the Supreme Court made the decision to junk, albeit partially, Section 377 of the IPC.
Many celebrities shared their views on the ruling and among them was actress Kangana Ranaut, who hailed the judgement made by the Supreme Court.
“This is a great news! It’s very progressive and democratic,” Pinkvilla quoted Ranaut as telling them in an exclusive interview.
Earlier, a five-judge Constitution Bench comprising of Chief Justice Dipak Misra, and Justices RF Nariman, DY Chandrachud, AM Khanwilkar and Indu Malhotra, had said while they had four different judgements, they were unanimous in the decision.
Speaking for himself and Justice Khanwilkar, CJI Misra said, “The Court must try to protect the dignity of every individual of the society including people from the LGBT community. The sexual orientation is natural and people have no control over it.”
He said denial of self-expression was akin to inviting death. He added that societal morality cannot trump constitutional morality. Societal morality cannot overturn the fundamental rights of even a single person.
On the work front, Kangana is busy with the shooting of movie ‘Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi’, an Indian epic biographical film based on the life of Rani Laxmibai of Jhansi. The movie is set to be released in the first month of 2019.
Another project the actress is involved in at the moment is ‘Mental Hai Kya’, a comedy movie also starring Rajkummar Rao and being directed by Prakash Kovelamudi and produced by Ekta Kapoor. The movie is set to release February 2019.
