Keerthy Suresh, Dulquer Salmaan’s period film Mahanati has released in theatres on May 9 to positive reviews, But it premiered in the USA on May 8 and box office collection is now out. The film based on the life and times of acclaimed South Indian actress Savitri Garu, has collected a huge amount on its opening day during USA premieres, beating Allu Arjun’s Naa Peru Surya and has become the fourth biggest Tollywood opener of 2018 in the country after Pawan Kalyan’s Agnyathavaasi, Mahesh Babu’s Ram Charan’s Rangasthlam.
The film releases in over 150 screens in the US the US alone and it collected $303,456 at the US box office in the premiere shows. Allu Arjun’s Naa Peru Surya had collected $214,000 in preview shows and so far was on the fourth spot, but is now dethroned by Mahanati.
Sharing the same, Idlebrain Jeevi, who keeps a watch on Telugu cinema, posted on Twitter, “#Mahanati collects $303,456 from 143 USA locations with per location average of $2,122. 4th biggest premiere number for Telugu film in USA this year after #Agnyathavasi, #BharathAneNenu & #Rangasthalam.” (sic)
The trade experts had put Mahanati opening day figure – worldwide – at Rs 10 crore. And now, with the USA premiere shows, it has already raked in around Rs 2 crore. So this feat may not be difficult to achieve. Is the home turf, the film has got thumbs up from critics, audience, as well as the Tollywood film industry. SS Rajamouli, Vamsi Kaka, Atlee are some of the film fraternity personalities who heaped praises on Mahanati director Nag Ashwin’s vision, hardwork and conviction and also lauded Keerthy Suresh’s portrayal of Savitri garu. The Tamil version of the film – Nadigaiyar Thilagam – will release worldwide on May 11.
