Keerthy Suresh, Dulquer Salmaan, Vijay Deverakonda and Samantha Ruth Prabhu’s Mahanati released in theatres on May 9 (with USA premieres on May 8) and the film has been adding to the list of its admirers ever since. After a good start thanks to the positive buzz and great reviews from critics, the film film has been doing well at the worldwide box office, riding on a good word of mouth. The film also raked in big moolah in key international markets, USA being one of them and has entered the list of top 10 Telugu grossers in USA within a week of its release.
The appreciation for the film is so massive, that it is also holding strong on weekdays shows and has raced past Mahesh Babu’s Bharat Ane Nenu in its first Tuesday collection at the USA box office. While Bharath Ane Nenu had earned $130k on its first Tuesday, Mahanati has bagged $138k. Ram Charan’s Rangasthalam is ahead of it with $151k and the top position is held by Varun Tej’s Fidaa which made $175k on its first Tuesday in US.

Mahanati is directed by Nag Ashwin and tells the story of Savitri garu, one of the most loved and biggest actresses of to emerge from South Indian cinema. She was married to superstar Gemini Ganesan and her life was full of enviable highs heart-wrenching lows. Mahanti has tried to tell her story in a non-fictional manner, recreating the era of the early 80s and taking people back in time. Right from the sets, backdrop, look of the various important characters and their performances – all have received thumbs up from audience and critics. This magnum opus is also the first biopic to come from the stables of Telugu cinema and this makes the feat all the more worth of celebrating.
