Mahanati is based on the professional as well as personal life of the actress and is set across four decades. So is the film worth watching? Read on what leading publications have to say about the film…

According to the Times Of India, “Samantha and Vijay Deverakonda, apart from the rest of the cast, are stupendous in their roles, not for a minute taking the attention away from the character they’re portraying. Samantha acing an emotional scene almost at the end of the film makes one remember the potential she has, the powerhouse of talent she really is. Nag Ashwin deserves all the credit as he has done a stupendous job. The film’s cinematography by Dani Sanchez-Lopez too is truly a beauty, bringing in a sepia-toned old-school feel, as if shot on a film camera. Watching ‘Mahanati’ is an experience one won’t forget soon as it will make you walk away with a heavy heart, mourning for a great artist whose life was wasted and lost.”

The Hans India in their review stated, ” Mahanati is one of the must-watch films. Keerthy Suresh completely steals the show as Savitri and it would be an understatement if we call, Savitri herself took birth as Keerthy. She completely lived in that character. The director has succeeded in re-renditioning the iconic scenes from Savitri garu’s hit films and will definitely give retro feels to the audience of that generation. The first half is good and in the second half, the narration seems slow down but emotions work out. From beginning to end, the director made us connect with each and every character in the film. With a huge star cast and terrific performance, Mahanati is a true tribute to great actress Savitri Garu.”

Sify in their review stated, “The film completely belongs to Keerthy Suresh. She is magnificent and exceptional as Savitri. This is a performance that she can be proud of for a long time. Her portrayal of Savitri is pitch perfect. The best performance comes when she finds the cheating of her husband. She is terrific here. As her husband Gemini Ganeshan, Dulquer Salmaan is excellent. He gives the best performance. It is tough to recreate the old era. But the production design team has shown excellent work. The Vijaya-Vahini Studios and old-Madras sets are created neatly. They are flashy but believable. The camerawork by Dani is fantastic. His colour tones are varied. Music by Micky J Meyer is excellent. The song Mooga Manasulu is beautifully filmed on screen.”

According to Mirchi 9, ” Keerthy Suresh has the lead role in real sense and rest of the artists are supporting to her. Among them, Dulquer Salman has bigger space and importance to the narrative. His character is of utmost importance as much as Savitri’s. And Dulquer Salman also delivers a terrific act. His chemistry with Keerthy Suresh in the first half is magical and the way he breaks internally in the second half due to personal insecurities and jealousy is sure to leave a strong impact.”
