Refuting charges levied against him of defying tax, Telugu actor Mahesh Babu, whose accounts were frozen on Thursday by the Goods and Services Tax department, said that that he was a law-abiding citizen complying with all fiscal legislations. Mahesh Babu, who is known for content-driven cinema with 11 of his films having IMDB rating of more than 7, has said that there was no undisputed tax payable despite his two bank accounts being frozen.
The actor’s legal team revealed that a dispute on the matter was pending before the court and released a statement on Friday that said, “The GST Commissionerate Hyderabad has attached the bank accounts for a disputed tax demand of Rs. 18.5 lakh claiming Rs. 73.5 lakh towards Tax interest and penalty for brand ambassador services rendered in FY 2007-08 which was not taxable service.” The GST Commissionerate, Hyderabad, froze the bank accounts without notice when several judicial pronouncements on the issue are in favour of Mahesh Babu and said on Thursday that the accounts were attached to recover service tax dues from him.

The Commissionerate issued a release stating that the actor has not paid the Service Tax during 2007-08 for the taxable services he rendered as brand ambassador, appearance money and advertising for promotion of products, among others. “Mahesh Babu is a law abiding citizen complying with all fiscal legislations and has no undisputed tax payable,” the release added given that the brand ambassador service was brought in the statute only from July 2010.
On the professional front, the actor wrapped up a schedule of his upcoming film Maharshi a few days ago and posted a picture on his official Instagram account where he is seen partying with actor-wife Namrata Shirodkar and close friends Ram Charan, Upasana Kamineni Konidela, Krishna R Bhupal and Dia Bhupal.
In the picture, Ram is seen taking the selfie as other actors huddle together for the group pic. Sharing the post on Instagram, Mahesh captioned it, “Schedule wrap for #Maharshi, a much-needed fun evening with friends & family! #whatmorecaniaskfor #holidayseason #december” (sic).
