The new President of Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes Mohanlal and Mammootty have been criticised for endorsing the accused, Dileep who was involved in the 2017 abduction and molestation case of the Malayalam actor. Netizens have slammed the decision to reinstate actor Dileep as a member of AMMA. Dileep is yet to receive a clean chit from the court. Mohanlal has been criticised for supporting the accused and lifting Dileep’s suspension. This has made the public believe that the guild is with the accused and has no concern for the safety of working women in the film industry.
The new office bearers of AMMA had earlier decided to reinstate the actor as due procedures were not followed when the actor was expelled. Mohanlal then took charge as the President. Several actors and members of the association supported the decision to take Dileep back. Irked with the decision, four female actors Remya Nambeesan, Geethu Mohandas, and Rima Kallingal have recently tendered their resignation from the Association. The actors made their decision public through the Women in Collective Cinema (WCC) Facebook page. Earlier Senior Congress MLA, P.T. Thomas, who was the first to know about the case first got in touch with the victim’s family and then went on to inform this to the police and also mentioned that AMMA should reconsider its decision on Dileep. He said, “It is now very clear that only a handful of the artists were genuine with the victim. Those leading lights who took part in the protest meetings held the next day of the kidnap attempt in Kochi, were only shedding crocodile tears.”
On July 11 last year, Dileep was removed from AMMA due to his involvement in the Malayalam actress’s abduction and rape case. According to reports, senior actors decided to take Dileep back in the body while several members of WCC stayed away from the meeting. Apart from these, the younger lot of actors comprising of Nivin Pauly, Tovino and Prithviraj stayed away from the first meeting.
