Oscars 2020: Actor Natalie Portman wore a stunning cape dress at the 92nd Academy Awards. While most leading female stars went for classic black and white gowns, Natalie opted for a lace black-golden dress that came with a black cape. At first glance, it seemed like a regular look but on a closer look, it did make a statement.
The cape featured the names of the female directors who did not get nominated for an Oscar at the ceremony this year. The names of these talented female directors snubbed by the Academy were sewed from a golden thread at the edge of Natalie’s cape. The names included Lulu Wang (The Farewell), Greta Gerwig (Little Women), Lorene Scafaria (Hustlers), Marielle Heller (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood) and Mari Diop (Atlantics) among others.
When a journalist from the Los Angeles Times asked her to comment on the same, the actor clearly stated she wanted to honour those who were left to be honoured by The Academy this year. “I wanted to recognise the women who were not recognised for their incredible work this year in a subtle way,” she explained.
The Academy got great criticism for not nominating female directors in the Best Director category for the second time in a row. This was not the first time that Natalie tried to make a comment on the organisers with her red carpet appearance. While announcing the Golden Globes 2018 nominations, the actor had slyly quipped “and now, here are all the male nominees.” This year, actor Issa Rae, while announcing the Oscars 2020 nominations, quote honestly put it out saying, “Congratulations to those men.”
Nominated in the category are Martin Scorsese for The Irishman, Todd Phillips for Joker, Sam Mendes for 1917, Quentin Tarantino for Once Upon A Time In Hollywood and Bong Joon Ho for Parasite.
