Rajinikanth’s latest Tamil film, Petta, has opened big in the USA. The superstar enjoys a great fan following there which has got translated into numbers for the film at the Box Office. Trade analyst Sreedhar Pillar took to Twitter to announce the same and wrote, “#Petta Opens Big in #USA Pre-sales Of Premiere Shows crosses $250,000. Good going will be the first to touch 1 Million among all South Indian releases” (sic). The film, which also features Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Trisha Krishnan and Vijay Sethupathy in important roles, has opened well in the domestic market too.

The wide positive response to Petta is also crucial because it faced a Box Office clash with Thala Ajith’s Viswasam. Both the films have managed to impress the audience. The ardent fans of both the actors are excited about the films. While Ajith’s father role is being praised, Rajinikanth’s style has taken over the screens too. And this was precisely the aim of Karthik Subbaraj, the film’s director: bring back the superstar’s swag on-screen. Talking about the same to IANS, the director mentioned earlier, “I grew up idolising Rajinikanth and I’ve always wanted to see him in a certain way. When I knew I was going to write for Rajini sir, I wanted to show him in the most stylish way and bring back his mannerisms and machismo”.

So much so is the excitement around Petta that a Rajinikanth-fan actually decided to get married outside a theatre in Chennai to mark the release date of the film. The video of the couple performing their wedding rituals outside a Chennai theatre went viral on social media today, on January 10.

Meanwhile, it would now be interesting to see how much does Petta earn at international Box Office considering the initial reports are positive. The film is also expected to rake in good moolah at Indian Box Office in the coming days.
