Rajinikanth completes 40 years in the movies: A quick look at his career

Rajinikanth is a prominent Indian film actor with massive fan following across the country and in Japan and Singapore. Starting with a humble background as a bus conductor, the South superstar and the god of Tamil cinema has completed 40 long years on the big screen. He is currently shooting for a Tamil film Lingaa pairing with the Sonakshi Sinha. There was a historic celebration taking place on the sets of the film in Chennai to congratulate the veteran actor for his contribution to the Indian Cinema.

Tollywood Career

Thalaivaa, as he is lovingly called as, has acted in more than 170 films in Tamil, Bengali, Hindi, Telugu, Kannada, English and Malayalam languages. His marked his debut in the Indian film arena with Apoorva Raagangal, 1975 Tamil film. Before taking upon lead roles, the 63-year-old actor played negative roles in his films. Bhuvana Oru Kelvi Kuri was the first movie in which he played a positive role.

Rajinikanth played the lead role in 2010 release Enthiran / Robot, which was one of the costliest movies ever made in India. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was paired alongside Rajini in the film, which was also one of the highest grossing films of the country.

His recent release was Kochadaiiyaan, directed by his daughter Soundarya R Ashwin and starring Deepika Padukone. The movie has earned him best reviews as an actor. Thalaivaa as he is known is also counted in the list of highest paid actors in Asia, after he took home Rs 26 crores for his 2007 film Sivaji – The Boss.

Bollywood Career

Rajnikanth’s Bollywood debut was Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini starrer Andha Kanoon (1983). The film was one of the highest grossing films of that period. His other Bollywwod movies include Jeet Hamaari, Meri Adalat, Gangvaa, John Jani Janardhan, Bhagwan Dada, Chaalbaaz, Hum and the latest one being RA.One, among others.

Rajnikanth made a special appearance in Shah Rukh Khan’s 2011 science fiction superhero film RA.One.

Honours & Recognitions

Thalaivaa was honoured with the Filmfare Best Actor award for Nallavanuku Nallavan (1984). He has received the Tamil Nadu State Film Awards nine times, of which six are under Best Actor category.

Rajinikanth’s on-screen performances and off-screen contributions has earned him numerous awards from Cinema Express and Filmfans’ Association. A.N. Prahlada Rao wrote a book on Rajinikanth in Kannada, which was released on October 7, 2013.
