Actor Rajinikanth starrer Petta has crossed $2 million in the USA. The amount totals to approx INR 14. 22 crore. With this, the Tamil film, directed by Karthik Subbaraj, becomes the fourth Rajinikanth film to cross $2 million at the USA Box Office. The other films which have achieved the feat are Endhiran (2010), Kabali (2016) and 2.0 (2018).

Trade analyst Ramesh Bala announced the news on Twitter and wrote, “#Petta crosses $2 Million in #USA.. 4th #Superstar @rajinikanth movie to do so after #Endhiran, #Kabali and #2Point0” (sic)

The film, which also features Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Trisha Krishnan and Vijay Sethupathy in important roles, opened well in the domestic market too. It received a wide positive response from the audience who got impressed with Rajinikanth’s stylish on-screen avatar.

The wide positive response to Petta was crucial also because it faced a Box Office clash with Thala Ajith’s Viswasam. Both the films have managed to impress the audience. The ardent fans of both the actors are excited about the films. While Ajith’s father role is being praised, Rajinikanth’s style has taken over the screens too. And this was precisely the aim of Karthik Subbaraj, the film’s director: bring back the superstar’s swag on-screen. Talking about the same to IANS, the director mentioned earlier, “I grew up idolising Rajinikanth and I’ve always wanted to see him in a certain way. When I knew I was going to write for Rajini sir, I wanted to show him in the most stylish way and bring back his mannerisms and machismo”.

So much so is the excitement around Petta that a Rajinikanth-fan actually decided to get married outside a theatre in Chennai to mark the release date of the film. The video of the couple performing their wedding rituals outside a Chennai theatre went viral on social media today, on January 10.

Meanwhile, it would now be interesting to see how much does Petta earn at international Box Office considering the reports from the USA are showing so much growth in collections.
