Release of Befikre is just around the corner (December 9, 2017) and the lead stars Ranveer Singh and Vaani Kapoor are already creating a buzz with their quirky love story. Amid this, Ranveer Singh is stuck in a new controversy. Recently, he did an advertising campaign for a popular international menswear brand, Jack and Jones. The campaign is named ‘Don’t hold back’ and it’s ad campaign shows the current brand ambassador Ranveer Singh carrying a woman on his shoulder. It has this rather eccentric caption for the image which says, “Don’t hold back. Take your work home.” However, this message was not much appreciated by Tamil actor Siddharth. Read on to know what he said about this ad campaign by Befikre actor Ranveer Singh.
The Rang De Basanti actor Siddharth is majorly known for his fearless and unbiased opinions about the current issues, especially concerning women! He has always supported women empowerment through his tweets in the past. When this ad campaign was spotted by the Tamil heartthrob, he immediately got vocal about it on social media!
Like always, the actor did not hold back and raised his objection at the way the girl in the image was portrayed and called ‘work’. He posted a picture of the hoarding showing the same ad campaign. He then wrote above it “A new low for women’s rights in the workplace in India. What were they thinking? #Fail“. Clearly, this chocolate boy from South is disappointed with the brand, the campaign and the people associated with it! The ad also didn’t go down well with a lot of Twitter users and following a Tsunami of tweets slamming the ad and the brand, the company finally withdrew the ad on 21 November. As per a report on Livemint, the clothing brand also individually tweeted to the complainants apologizing for causing distress.
This however is not the first time that a B-town actor has gotten into trouble for campaigning for an ad. There have been many such incidents in the past where the tinsel town stars had to face heavy criticism. Here we some ads that landed some of the biggest Bollywood stars in a controversy!
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan: This controversy is quite fresh in the public memory. The blue eyed actress who is hailed for her ageless beauty, featured in the print media ad of a popular jewellery brand named Kalyan Jewellers. The ad showed Aishwarya sitting royally as a queen and a dark skinned kid held an umbrella over her. The ad created a lot off negative buzz resulting into an open letter to Aishwarya. People criticized it calling it ‘insidiously racist’ and were outraged on this concept. However, Kalyan Jewellers later released a statement saying it ‘we deeply regret the same. We have started the process of withdrawing this creative from our campaign.’
Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna: Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna are shining bright since they have been on the Koffee with Karan. But this popular duo was in trouble waters in 2009 because of their controversial ‘act’ while promoting a denim brand. Khiladi Kumar was walking ramp and then he stopped by where his wife Twinkle was standinga and asked her to unbutton his jeans. Twinkle did as said! This act was not much appreciated by a social worker who then filed a case of obscenity against Akshay, Twinkle and the denim brand of course!
Milind Soman and Madhu Sapre: One cannot forget the buzz that was created by this duo in the the early days of 1995. Milind Soman and Madhu were seen in an ad that promoted a brand of shoes. However, this ad was no ordinary ad of shoes. Soman and Madhu were featured wearing no clothes and just the pair of shoes with python around them to cover the private body parts. This ad took the nation by storm as it was considered ‘too’ bold way back then!
Amitabh Bachchan: Well, even the Shahenshaah of Bollywood was not spared by the criticism for his ad. Amitabh Bachchan was in an ad by Parle’s ‘Kacha Mango Bite’ where he was pelting stones at a mango tree . The Advertising Standard Council of India discouraged it saying that the kids might imitate Big B and throw stones at the mango tree in tree in real life. Following this complaint, the commercial was taken down.
Malaika Arora and Arbaaz Khan: Malaika Arora and Arbaaz Khan are quite in limelight because of their divorce issue. However back in early 90s, they were in trouble for their in-screen intimacy! Mr. Coffee Instant Coffee Print Ad. had the actors displayed in an intimate way with a tag line, ” Real pleasure can’t come in an ‘instant’”’. This ad was criticized saying that the ad was misleading and obscene!
Even though some of these ads were taken down, they remained fresh in the public minds for a long time. As of now, the Tamil star has criticized the ad campaign by Jack and Jones and we are keen to know about the fate of this ad! Also, we are waiting for a reaction from Ranveer Singh to clear his stance. Do you find the ad sexist and offensive to women? Comment and let us know.
