The most awaited 2016 Rio Olympics finally took of this weekend. It is one of the greatest sporting event in the world that offers a great platform for all aspiring talents to showcase their skills. The opening ceremony took place at Maracanã Stadium, Rio de Janeiro on August 5 and it was quite glitzy. Although a number of controversies grabbed headlines before India headed for Rio, we still have expectations from our sportspersons. India is hoping to win gold medals this year and is counting upon its talent to make the tricolour proud. Back in India, everyone is keenly waiting to hear about Indian players win and the list also includes Bollywood celebrities.

HT Café got in touch with few actors, who are huge sports buff, about Indian players at Rio Olympics 2016. These Bollywood celebrities also revealed the player their counting upon this year to bring home some medals.

 The list includes;

1. John Abraham:

We all know how involved John Abraham is with sports. The Dishoom actor is rooting for Shiva Thapa (boxing), Narsingh Yadav (wrestling) and Men’s hockey team this Olympics. John says, “Shiva being a probable medalist, is someone to watch out for.” He also adds, “Before being exonerated, Narsingh Yadav made news for all the right and wrong reasons. The Bollywood star has great expectations from Men’s hockey team and says, “I will watch out for their performance largely due to my proximity to Sardar Singh (a member of the team). Coach Roelant Oltmans has said the team is improving; I hope it improves in time for the matches.”

2. Varun Dhawan:

While brother John Abraham has high hopes from India Men’s hockey team, Varun is no exception. Additionally, Varun Dhawan is counting upon, Saina Nehwal (badminton) and Sania Mirza (tennis) to win some medals. Talking about the ace badminton player he said, “The 2012 Olympics bronze medalist will again be India’s biggest hope in the sport.” Further talking about Sania Mirza he said, “Sania has been having a dream run at several Grand Slams. Also, her experience will come in handy.”

3. Sidharth Malhotra:

While John and Varun are counting upon men’s hocking team, Sidharth Malhotra roots for the women’s hockey team. The actor says, “They have made it to the Olympics after 36 long years. So, it will be exciting to see how far they go.” The Baar Baar Dekho hottie also supports Deepika Kumari (archery) and thinks, “She is among India’s biggest medal hopes in the individual as well as the team events.” He is also counting upon boxer Shiva Thapa, who “Ranked sixth in the world in his category, Thapa has a lot of expectations riding on him.”

4. Nawazuddin Siddiqui:

The Freaky Ali star is playing the role of an ace golf player in his upcoming film. For Rio Olympics 2016, he has high hopes on badminton player Saina Nehwal, Dipa Karmakar (gymnastics) and the controversial wrestler Narsingh Yadav. Talking about Saina, Nawaz says, “She’s the stuff champions are made of. If she’s in full form, she has a great chance to go all the way.”

Nawazuddin thinks Dipa is a dark horse because, “She has made history (she is the first female gymnast from India to qualify for the Olympics). The 22-year-old could be a dark horse.” According to the actor, Narsingh Yadav has a reason to win. 5. Rahul Bose:

Rahul Bose is a sports aficionado and is equally passionate about fitness. Rahul says he has never seen anyone as balanced as Abhinav Bindra. He adds, “I have rarely seen someone so perfectly balanced between poise, preparation and competitiveness.” He is also counting on Saina Nehwal to bring glory to our country, “I have seen only a few sportspersons play with such sheer determination to bring glory to her and the country.”

Lastly, Rahul think gymnast Dipa Karmakar is the one he is looking forward to. “Hers is a fairy tale of rising despite great odds in a discipline that Indians have no history of excelling in. What a moment it is going to be for her when she competes in Rio!,” adds the bollywood star.
