When the Indian Olympic Association (IOC) decided to make Bollywood superstar Salman Khan the goodwill ambassador for the Rio Olympics 2016, it was met with much resistance from sportspersons, except some like shooter Abhinav Bindra who have shown their support for Salman. India’s champion wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt was the first to question Salman’s appointment. And now, Salman’s ex Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has herself has come out in support of him! Aishwarya expressed her support for Salman at an event related to L’Oreal and the Cannes International Film Festival 2016.
“Anybody who is doing good to represent the country and anybody who is working or seeking or standing out for whatever vocation we have in the country be it sports, arts or music, I think that’s wonderful and needs to be recognised,” said Aishwarya Rai Bachchan on Salman Khan.
Salman’s father Salim Khan also justified his appointment, and now Indiatimes reports Salman himself coming out to explain why he was chosen. Here is what Salman Khan said!
Salman told The Times of India, “The Olympics are not that well covered and watched in India like in other countries. So, when somebody comes to support the players, it makes them feel good and work harder. They become more inspired and dedicated. Having someone like me helps in creating a buzz about the Olympics.”
Salman is also planning to travel to Brazil for Rio 2016. He said to TOI, “I want to charge up the players and see how they are progressing. If we can increase our medal tally compared to last year, it would be great. When that happens, the infrastructure, diet, coaching and other facilities get better. Pehle (ambassador) nahi lekar aaye thay toh theek hai, par ab jab kisi ko lekar aaye hain toh the players should be encouraged. Since I can only participate in the Olympics if walking were a sport, isiliye main woh hoon jo gaadi ko piche se dhakka de sakta hai. I will also try to go to Rio in the initial phase of the Olympics.”
Another ex-girlfriend of Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif simply said that Salman is always embroiled in some controversy or another.
Incidentally, Salman plays a wrestler in his upcoming movie Sultan. That may have something to do with his being chosen as goodwill ambassador. Sultan releases on Eid 2017 while Rio 2016 aka the Summer Olympic Games begin in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on August 5. The Games will go on till August 21, 2016.
Another viral story on this topic was that Salman’s ex Aishwarya Rai Bachchan had filed a petition against his selection as brand ambassador for Rio 2016. But it seems it was some other Aishwarya Rai, not the Bachchan bahu, who has filed the petition. It is good to see the real Aishwarya Rai Bachchan also supporting Salman Khan, without naming him!
