The much awaited film ‘Rock On 2’ starring Farhan Akhtar, Shraddha Kapoor, Arjun Rampal, Prachi Desai, Purab Kohli and Shashank Arora has hit the silver screens today (November 11). This film directed by Shujaat Saudagar is a sequel to the 2008 released film ‘Rock On’ which was directed by Abhishek Kapoor. The fabulous group are back to showcase their Magik all over again. Our reviewer Preeti Kulkarni is watching this second instalment of the 2008 hit musical drama. Here is what she has to say.
Rock On 2, a sequel after the very successful Rock On!!, starts off from exactly where it left years ago. Now, the boys ( Farhan Akhtar, Arjun Rampal, Purab Kohli) are all grown up and there are a few additions Shraddha Kapoor and… but apart from this, there is nothing new there sequel has to offer. The effort taken by the lead actors seem fruitless, let down by a weak story. The movie starts off with Farhan Akhtar turning into a recluse, running off to Meghalaya to fight a distant, painful past.
Enter Shraddha Kapoor. Daddy issues, insecurity and passion for music are her qualifications to enter Magik. There is Farhan living a life of an ascetic in the oh-so-gorgeous locales of the North East while he reminisces about the happier times spent with his band and his peeps. Years have passed but Arjun Rampal looks flawless with his dimpled smile and a swanky new haircut. Purab is still the joker of the group and the narrator of this uninspiring story. The plot till now does not hold your attention nor are you gripped by its narrative. (ALSO READ: Rock On 2 music review: Farhan Akhtar’s ‘Magik’ creates magic all over again!)
Looks like Rock On 2, like most sequels, does not meet our expectations, even the music fails to create the same magic. Farhan tries hard to express his pathos while he uses music as his catharsis, a familiar territory for him, but it does not come across. Shraddha tries hard to perform but she is limited by her acting abilities. The bad news is that her singing abilities are just as limited. The Farhan-Shraddha chemistry is obvious but not crackling enough to compel you to watch the film. The film ends on an interesting note with Shraddha Kapoor’s Jia running away from stage. Will thw group be able to relive their once glorious days with new additions?
