The nation was in a surprise on Tuesday evening, November 8, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the current Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency notes will be illegal starting midnight. Everybody frantically shared the news on social media, and WhatsApp, Twitter and Facebook are filled with reactions, jokes and memes about the same. Celebrities from Bollywood, cricket, politics and literature hailed Narendra Modi’s move to ease out black money from the hands of the corrupt. But some people criticised Modi for it, although these are few and far between. Bollywood celebs like the legendary Amitabh Bachchan to Ae Dil Hai Muskhil actress Anushka Sharma, as well as actresses Diana Penty, Urvashi Rautela (Salman Khan’s latest ‘friend’) and television actress Rashami Desai have congratulated the PM. Actor Arjun Kapoor shared his differing opinion on the historic moment in many tweets. He said, “The timing of the PM is interesting but the question is what will the government provide back to its fair & honest citizens after all this ? Reducing black money is much needed but eventually we need better infrastructure & way more inroads in other aspects not only money matters. Hoping we can all work in harmony to see out this change & it pays dividends to each & every citizen in the future. No more #BlackMoney !!!”
Actor Rishi Kapoor congratulated PM Modi. Directors Madhur Bhandarkar, Anurag Kashyap and Shirish Kunder, among other celebs, have also tweeted. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Twitter, “Historic and courageous decision on Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes to stop corruption and flow of black money. *Hats off* Hon @narendramodi ji !” BJP chief Amit Shah called it a “surgical strike” by Narendra Modi against black money, referring to the recent surgical strike on Pakistan. Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan likened the images of the new notes of Rs 2000 denomination as pink in colour because of his superhit women’s empowerment movie Pink! He said, “the new 2000 rs note is PINK in colour … the PINK effect ..!!”Anushka Sharma tweeted, “A welcome bold&courageous step by PM Modiji towards nation building.Each 1of us shld cooperate in d larger interest of d nation #BlackMoney”. PM Modi’s Khaas Aadmi – superstar Salman Khan is yet to tweet about the announcement.
