It seems the Dilwale debacle has put brought in some sense to Mr Shah Rukh Khan‘s head, as he is contemplating teaming up with maverick director Vishal Bhardwaj for his next. If the khabar is true, it means the superstar is coming back to doing author-backed roles like Chak De! India where he astonished people with his role based on hockey coach Mir Ranjan Negi’s life.
Dilwale might not be a debacle at the box office, with worldwide collections of more than Rs 300 crore since the film released on December 18, 2015, but in terms of story it fell flat. Everybody felt that the iconic pair of Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol was wasted in director Rohit Shetty’s nonsense on celluloid. And yet, the film made money.
But the point is that more than the money, stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan and Salman Khan need good roles now. SRK has two movies – FAN and Raees – releasing in succession. After that, he needs to announce something substantial as his next project. Could it be with Vishal Bhardwaj?
FAN is directed by Maneesh Sharma and releases on April 15, 2016. Raees is directed by Rahul Dholakia and will release on Eid 2016 – the same day as Salman Khan’s Sultan. So, 2016 will decide Shah Rukh Khan’s fate in the acting department for the immediate future. And although it looks good, we think if Vishal approaches him with a good role, he should just take it without thinking too much!
Vishal is an acclaimed director and music director in Bollywood. His directorial filmography includes movies like Omkara, Maqbool, Haider, Kaminey and The Blue Umbrella. He is currently filming Rangoon starring Shahid Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan and Kangana Ranaut. The film is set to be based on American favourite Casablanca.
