Spider-Man is back! Yes, there would be many who’d argue that this reboot was not needed. However, the deal between Marvel Studios and Sony in 2015 had me excited. In Spider-Man: Homecoming, the superhero mergers with the Marvel Comic Universe! Yes, that did show promise of twice as good entertainment, didn’t it? The film, the second reboot of the Spider-Man film franchise is directed by Jon Watts, and brings in Tom Holland as a simple, guy-next-door guy juggling between high school life and being a superhero. Apart from Holland, the film also stars Michael Keaton, Jon Favreau, Donald Glover, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Laura Harrier, Tyne Daly, Marisa Tomei, and Robert Downey Jr. The trailers looked good and the film received a lot of positive press when it released to audience abroad. But does Spider-Man impress or disappoint with this reboot? Find out…

What’s It About:

Peter Parker, also our favourite web-slinging superhero Spider-Man (Tom Holland) had a great outing with the Avengers in Captain America. But life is not always exciting and Peter is going through one the most boring patch right now. He is having a tough time getting back to a normal high school life even as he returns home with Aunt May (Marisa Tomei). While she dotes on him, Peter has Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) playing the strict at times, sweet at others watchful mentor. But Peter is getting desperate. He wants to be on a real mission and is done being just the neighborhood spider-man or the spidey-kid like some call him. Will Peter be able to ward off thoughts of taking on something to prove that he is more than what people have seen him to be already? That he is more than their expectations of the sweet and endearing Spider-Man? Some thrill rolls back into his life with the entry of Vulture (Michael Keaton)! He is meaner and mightier and while this is Spider-Man’s opportunity to prove a point, a lot is at stake as well!

What’s hot:

TOM HOLLAND! Yes! After Andrew Garfield, who was O…Kay… Spider-Man franchise needed someone as endearing and charming as Holland. The guy had already impressed me in his very little screen time in Captain America: Civil War so nothing much to be surprised here. But Homecoming is all about Peter and Holland, with his exuberance, does a great job at keeping us hooked throughout the film. I have loved Tobey Maguire as the spidey boy, but Holland beats him hands down! ALSO READSpider-Man: Homecoming star Tom Holland is awed by Tiger Shroff! Watch Video

Tom’s Peter Parker is a millennial superhero with a heart. He us not invincible unlike other superheroes, but someone who messes up ALL THE TIME, upsets Iron Man and gets his suit taken away too as some point for crossing the line. You will find it hard to not fall in love with the fact that it is not just muscle power that he applies to take on the baddies, but also his brains! He is a geek and makes full use of his curious nature to unearth the bad and ugly and bring the baddies to test.

Tony Stark or Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) is full of his usual badass swag and just looking at him in his limited screen time will do weird things to you and your body! He is perfect as Peter’s mentor and I absolutely loved the fact that he didn’t overshadow Spider-Man. Barring one time when he rescues Parker, he let the kid fight his own battles. Just before the climax action sequence, Peter is seen trying to reach out to Stark desperately! How much ever love I harbor for Iron Man, I was praying for him to not appear here! Spider-Man: Homecoming has merged with the rest of Marvel Comic Universe, but it is still a Spider-Man movie and the story or screenplay didn’t fail him!

The story is gripping and will keep you on the edge of your seat and this is a feat in itself since there were not one, not two but six writers involved in the screenplay! You’d expect Homecoming to turn into a classic case of ‘Too many cooks spoiling the broth’, but this new Spider-man outing is just an example of how team work can achieve great results.

Marvel always awes us with the special-effects in its films and the case isn’t different here too.

Holland’s sidekick Ned Leeds (Jacob Batalon) is aptly cast and is in awe of superheroes. As much as he is impressed with the fact that his friend Peter is THE superhero Spider-Man, he keeps him on the ground and in check of his more real problems. Like attending a class or using his “connections” with Spider-Man to woo his crush. He also btw, plays a superhero himself for a brief moment and saves our Peter Parker’s life! Zendaya delivers a restrained performance which is hard to ignore. In her interviews, she has denied that she is the rebooted Mary Jane (MJ) but by the end of Homecoming, we know she is very well on the way to be that!

Michael Keaton as vulture / Adrian Toomes does what he is expected to do! Look menacing and hot all at the same time!

What’s not?

The film gets predictable towards the end! Obviously, Spider-Man had to win! But that’s not all. He gets an invitation from Tony Stark who talks about how he was wrong about Peter. Clichéd much? He offers him to be an official part of Team Avengers, and at that point you know what to expect next!

What to do?

Peter Parker is just the guy who has all that it takes to appeal to the young audience of today! Director Jon Watts (36) knew how to get a hold on his audience. He gives us a spider-man who is geeky, vulnerable and ambitious to prove himself! His emotions, his challenges are real and his edge of the seat drama will keep you entertained and waiting for the next one. Yes, there is another one coming! You get a glimpse of the updated Spidey suit just before the end credits roll and you know it’s not over yet!
