It is the season of biopics and the latest to join the bandwagon is Gippy Grewal, who is all set to play Joginder Singh in the upcoming Punjabi biopic, Subedar Joginder Singh. While known for his comic timing in Punjabi blockbusters like Carry On Jatta and Lucky Di Unlucky Story, the actor is all set to take his fans by surprise by bringing the story of the Param Vir Chakra awardee’s alive on the big screen. The first look of the film has been released and by the looks of it, Gippy has nailed the basic requirement of the perfect biopic, which is all about looking convincing as the real life character one is playing.
The actor prepared for the role for months on end to get into the skin of the character and also feel the love and devotion and the sacrifices he made while in the line of duty. We hear that he has also performed most of the stunts on his own, without using a body double so as to being as much authenticity as possible to the role. The actor took to Instagram to reveal the first look of the film with a heartwarming message that read, “Mai iss layak nahi, par tuhade pyar da sadka, mai apni jaan la ti iss mahaan atma ke kirdaar nu nibhaun vaaste.” (I am not worthy, but I swear and promise to give my all to play this character with utmost sincerity). In another post, highlighting the brave soul that Joginder Singh was, Gippy wrote, “He May be cut apart, piece by piece, but he never leaves the field of battle (sic).”

While the film is primarily in Punjabi, it will also release in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu and later dubbed in more Indian languages to ensure that the inspiring story of Subedar Joginder Singh, who fought for India’s independence under the First Battalion of the Sikh Regiment in 1936, reaches a wider audience.
He lost his life during the Indo-Sino war of 1962 in Chinese captivity. The film on his life story is scheduled for a 2018 release and has been extensively shot in Kargil & Dras, Rajasthan and Assam.
