Actor, politician, director Kamal Hassan was recently accused of having “shallow understanding” of caste polity after a 2014 interview of his daughter Shruti Hassan declaring her ‘Iyengar’ status went viral. Kamal, on June 29 took a question-answer session with his Twitter fans where he responded to a query and said, “I refused to fill in the caste&religion column in both my daughters’ school admission certificate. That’s the only way,it will pass on to the next generation. Every individual shld start contributing fr progress. Kerala started implementing the same. Those who do shld be celebrated. (sic)”

Twitterati then found out a September 2014 interview of Shruti on the chat show ‘Look who’s talking with Niranjan’ where the hosts ask Shruti as to why she refers to him as her “Aambalaiyaan.” Shruti replied to that saying, “It is because you’re Iyengar and I am Iyengar and we are both creative. And there’s a very high chance that nobody will marry either of us.” Pointing to Shruti’s interview, Hassan was criticised by Twitterati for having double standards. Talking about the same, general secretary of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, D Ravikumar said, “(The tweet) shows that his understanding of caste system is shallow which is why he suggests such remedies. My humble request for Kamal would be to read Ambedkar’s Annihilation of Caste.”

Other Twitter users picked up films done by Kamal where he has added caste names to his films. One such example was a film directed by Kamal himself, ‘Sabash Naidu.’ It is a story of Balram Naidu from Dasavatharam, in which Kamal plays ten characters. Shruti Hassan will be seen opposite Kamal playing the role of his daughter and this will be the very first time the two will share the screen.
