Despite getting negative reviews, Thugs Of Hindostan surprised all by earning a whopping Rs 52.25 crore on the first day of its release in theatres. The movie, starring Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Katrina Kaif and Fatima Sana Shaikh in pivotal roles, was released on November 8 and it became the biggest Diwali opener of all time. However, the second day saw a different scene, as there was a sharp decline with the movie earning just Rs 28.25 crore at the box office.
Film trade analyst Taran Adarsh, who had tweeted about the movie smashing all records after making over Rs 50 crore on day one, again took to Twitter to reveal that the earnings have declined on the second day, though it is still doing better on single screens than in multiplexes.
Taran, in another tweet, said that the movie will have to perform better on day 3 and 4, as from day 5 onwards, with the weekdays starting, it will have a tough time at the box office.
The movie had been performing well in Gujarat, UP, Rajasthan, Delhi, Mumbai and Bihar, but now the decline at these places too is noticeable. Gujarat has an extended five day holiday period so the movie could do better there.
Earlier, the movie, which was written and directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya, and produced by Aditya Chopra under his banner Yash Raj Films, had got mixed reviews from fans and moviegoers alike.
The story, set in 1795, about a band of thugs that take on the British East India Company and tries to free India from its grip, got much attention before its release, but most who have watched it say that it is engrossing only in the first hour and after that it was a boring affair.
