Afghanistan will play the opening game of the Asia Cup 2025 edition when they take on minnows Hong Kong in a Group B clash at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday. The Afghans are coming into this tournament after a humiliating 75-run loss at the hands of Pakistan in a tri-series final also involving UAE.

Rashid Khan’s side must win their opening game against Hong Kong as they will be facing much tougher opponents in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in their next two group matches if they home to progress to the Super 4 stage. The Afghans have been built up as the second-best team from the sub-continent after Team India after they qualified for the Super 6 stage in the T20 World Cup 2024 last year.

Afghanistan are expected to coming into this contest with a spin-heavy attack led by skipper Rashid Khan with Mohammad Nabi, Allah Ghazanfar and Noor Ahmad joining him. Hong Kong, on the other hand, have never won a match at the Asia Cup in the last 21 years – losing all of their last 11 matches.
